Starbucks is always the first enterprise to start their Christmas campaign and consecutive promotion changes 1 month before Christmas time. This action is in order to promote their sale and to tell people that: Christmas is coming soon.
Every year, they redesign their cup with the colour of Christmas – Red and the interesting Christmas symbol. However, this year they decided to simplise the new Christmas cup design with only red colour. This decision created a big wave of disagreements.
In 1997, the first year Starbucks released the unique cup design for Christmas. From that year, Stabucks cups with catching-eye patterns such as: Xmas tree, Snowflakes and the Rudolf deer. These patterns has become a Christmas symbol with American. This year, the cup is designed so simply with only red colour covering the cup from magenta to plum red. Some say that this design is simple and modern, however, some argue that this design is “a declaration of war” with sacred holidays.
The argument is more exciting when Donald Trump – one of the American Presidential Candidates said that “No more ‘Merry Christmas’ at Starbucks. No more. Maybe, we should boycott Starbucks? I don’t know. Seriously, I don’t care. By the way, that’s the end of that lease but who cares.”
Starbucks still keep their opinion, because this design is to encourage customers to draw their Xmas story. Starbucks company has issued this statement: “Since 1997, we have served our holiday beverages in a unique red cup, each year and each design telling a different story. Starbucks is inviting our customers to tell their own Christmas stories in their own way with a red that mimics a blank canvas.”
And of course, there are always the disagreements.
“This is a denial of historical reality and the great Christian heritage behind the American Dream that has so benefitted Starbucks,” Andrea Williams of the U.K.-based organization Christian Concern told that “This also denies the hope of Jesus Christ and His story so powerfully at this time of year.”
However, while Starbucks 2015 Holiday Cup doesn’t bear any Christmas symbols, the chain still sells “Christmas Blend” coffee, offers gift cards with holiday symbols, and even vends Advent calendars
However, in the designers opinion the colour is perfect for Christmas with 2 main colours: red and green. Furthermore, red colour background will make Starbucks green logo be more impressive, and the green logo is the great focus point in this design. Besides, the colour changes from magenta to plum red is so harmony and the combination between red and green make people feel cozy Christmas coming.
Whatever, Happy holiday
